First thing…
At 8 o’clock this evening LH will go and join the happy band of bellringer’s to ring out the old year with muffled bells in our village church tower. The bells are then unmuffled in preparation for midnight. Muffled bells have a haunting quality about them and I love to hear them. In the meantime the ringers and partners will gather together in one of the cottages for a feast. At quarter to midnight they will return to the tower to begin joyful ringing in of the New Year at the stroke of midnight for half an hour. When ringing is complete they then celebrate with something alcoholic π They deserve it β€
Second thing…
I love such serendipitous coincidences; it’s like God smiling on me. Its New Year’s Eve and I’ve just got my 300 th follower. What a lovely little way to end the old year π
Happy New Year to You & Your’s. I so badly want to live in your village. It just sounds so delightful and full of traditions.

Oh that sounds like such a cool way to ring in the new year! As kids we used to stand on the deck and bang pots and pans, but bells seem way neater!

We live right next to the tower so we get the full impact of it π I’m sure pots and pan bashing as children must have been thrilling π

It was! We had no close neighbours so could be as loud as we wanted:) Now I think my neighbours would be mighty upset!

Congrats! The bells would sound wonderful ringing in the cold air. In Melbourne there are only a few bell ringers to do the rounds of the two Cathedrals and the old historic churches in the city. This is a busy time of year for them. Most are over 70 and their leader is in his 30s so they are calling for volunteers as trainees. It would be sad for this tradition to disappear here. Hope your LH had a great time. Happy New Year!

That would be sad and very difficult to reinstate once gone.
