Hi folks,
It all started with this little felted bowl…
I loosely crocheted a bowl shape and then felted it. I added a crochet border. It’s not a great colour but as it was an experiment I was fine with it. It holds little notions at the moment…
A few weeks on and I thought I’d be clever and make a larger bowl. I had spun a hundred grams of grayish brown Gotland fibre that I bought fromΒ here. I didn’t enjoy spinning it and I didn’t make a very good job of it either so it was my go to choice for a larger bowl. So I crocheted away creating a nice flat base and then went straight up the sides. I thought it would create a cylindrical bowl type shape.
I was wrong. Very wrong. Get ready to laugh out loud π…
Yep! It became a hat! A cloche hat at that. This is the photo that LH took for me so I could show my friend G.
Ok, that’s enough, you can stop laughing now!
So here is a close up. I crocheted a simple edge around the brim and added a simple crochet flower and embroidery in handspun teal merino from the same lovely supplier…
So there we are. A happy accident π
Awesome very 1920’s retro vogue π

It’s beautiful. Love the turquoise colour highlights. & How clever to spin yarn. Amazing. I knit & did start a hat but wasn’t keen on the colour. I have a fair stash of DK, & need to buy some more chunky. Lovely to see your finished project that transmogrified.ππΈ

Thank you very much. I have a thing for turquoise and teal; even my current specs are teal! π I enjoy knitting too but crochet grows more quickly π

I was going to say I love the colour of that flower and the edge, is that turquoise/teal?

That is positively adorable! It looks fantastic! I never would have envisioned that outcome, but it is great. I did laugh out loud, though, but not at the hat…your expression is priceless! Wear it in good health.

It’s wonderful. I have some old needlecraft books from the 1920s and 30s and I was looking at one yesterday. Your hat would not look out of place in the millinery section.

Thank you very much π How wonderful to have those old books. I find vintage and antique craft books fascinating. I buy them when I can find them at affordable prices. I don’t fancy the knitted underwear though as it reminds me of having to wear itchy woollen vests πΉπ»πΌβ€

I love it! The blue accents are perfect. I love the texture of the hat. I want to reach out and stroke it. Unfortunately, I live in Montana-USA and you live in England. A bit too far. Any mistakes you felt were in the spinning are nicely cloaked in the fulling. And…never forget the galloping horse!

I love it, now what you need is a flapper dress π I have such weakness to everything in 1920s style and this hat shape is just like that. You look great in it and your smile is amazing!

A very happy accident indeed! I love the cloche style of hats. Your photo looks great. Last year I blogged about a beanie exhibition and one of the contributors has a background in sculpture. Their attitude is that a hat is nothing more than an upside down bowl anyway so if you know how to crochet a bowl, you can crochet a hat and vice versa. You proved it in such a fun and sweet way, Tracey – Looking good. π
